Backing material

The backing material forms the basis of the abrasive and serves as the platform for the abrasive grain and bond. It determines the flexibility, tear strength and area of application of the abrasive. It also transfers the stock removal forces to the relevant workpiece

Paper backing properties:

  • Stretch-resistant
  • Smooth surface ensures smooth running
  • Lower weight compared to cloth
  • The lighter the paper, the more flexible the backing becomes
  • Cost-effective
  • Requires careful handling, especially at high grinding pressures

Properties of cloth backing:

  • High tear strength
  • Depending on the application, various cloth backings are available – from extremely flexible to extremely sturdy
  • It can also be used in wet grinding

Properties of vulcanised fibre:

  • Multi-layered material made of special papers
  • Extremely sturdy backing
  • Very high tear strength
  • Used for fibre discs

What do you need to keep in mind about backing?

  • Choose a backing material suitable for the machine
  • Assess the load realistically
  • Factor in material and grinding pressure
