Coating types
Coating types describe how densely the abrasive grains are distributed. They influence the performance and clogging of the abrasive, stock removal and grinding pattern.
Different coating types enable optimal use of the grain properties and the grain gaps as chip spaces. VSM distinguishes between standard, combined and open coating types.
With standard coating, the grain is fixed upright on the maker coat. The space in between the grains is narrow (closed coated) or medium (medium closed-coated).
With combined coating, support grains are placed in the gaps to better fix the abrasive grain in place. This coating is especially effective in applications where contact pressure is limited.
With open coating, the grain also stands upright on the backing. However, the distances between the abrasive grains are larger. As a result, the pressure at hand is distributed across fewer abrasive grains, thereby increasing the pressure per grain and thus enhancing the self-sharpening effects. The chips are also better dissipated with open coating.
